(October 26, 2006)(Updated November 1, 2006)  How Many Decades Equals “Established?”An Investigation into Course Scheduling in the CoB "This Special Report examines the spring 2007 teaching schedule in the EFIB. Sources tell usmpride.com that EFIB Chair George Carter provided soft schedules to the newly hired economists because they “are not established in the profession yet.” This report looks at the spring 2007 teaching schedule of one of the two new hires in economics, Akbar Marvasti. Marvasti’s spring 2007 schedule is presented below: ...
(October 26, 2006) A colleague provided a copy of Dr. Mixon's appeal of grievance and grievance which you may read in their entirety by clicking on the links.  As I read the appeal, I was reminded of a line from Les Miserables:  "If I speak, I am condemned!  If I stay silent, I am damned!"  I cannot help but wonder how many people, when faced with administrative abuse, have had the same thought.  If you believe it is in your best interests to stay silent on this, and other critical issues involving our school, consider the following quote from an email Dr. Mixon sent his colleagues in EFIB concerning the grievance and appeal.  cmd "...  I would advise each of you to read through the information very thoroughly and carefully.  "You, too, could easily find yourself in my position at some point in the future...". (Emphasis added.)  See also, Black Tuesday.  Be sure to read Exhibit 4 to the appeal of grievance which includes Carter’s observations about various faculty and administrators.  For example, "Carter did say 'he's [i.e., Doty's] not all there...", indicating that he (Carter) beleives Doty to be mentally unbalanced or unstable in some way."  You may want to know what Dr. Carter thinks about you.

Below you will find the spring 2007 teaching schedule that EFIB Chair George Carter assigned to himself: ... Next, we turn to the fall 2006 teaching schedule of Franklin Mixon, also a professor of economics."  See also, Developing Story con't;
(October 25, 2006) UPDATE (October 31, 2006)  More “Spring Breaks” for Nissan in 2007? -- An Investigation into Course Scheduling in the CoB "In the second half of spring 2007, or 8W2, Nissan’s courses are taught from 2:00pm on Wednesdays through 5:10pm on Thursdays, again providing Nissan with 141 consecutive hours of out-of-class time. Nissan’s 1-preparation, 2 days per week schedule will likely facilitate a good bit of travel that the CoB will ultimately be responsible for. As we stated in an earlier report, Nissan could easily commute to USM from a base in San Francisco, and possibly even from London, throughout the spring semester of 2007. And, since his fall 2006 schedule offered the same “141 consecutive hours” benefit, he could live in San Francisco all year during 2006-07 if he so desired. ... Usmpride.com readers are aware of reports that show that all of Carter’s research output comes through “co-authorship” with Nissan. Thus, any preferential treatment provided to Nissan will have obvious financial benefits for Carter. Given Nissan’s penchant for travel, time and travel funds are of paramount importance to Nissan. Carter is apparently willing to provide Nissan with copious amounts of both."
(October 23, 2006) What was a “Black Tuesday” Proxy Worth? A Look at Circumstances Suggesting a Potential Vote-for-Benefits Arrangement In the course of their investigations into the spring 2007 EFIB teaching loads, investigators have put together a cases that suggests there may have been a vote-trading arrangement in the EFIB regarding the now infamous “Black Tuesday” EFIB governance re-vote. In carrying the day on 19 September 2006, George Carter needed every bit of the help that CoB Associate Dean Farhang Niroomand’s vote, and those of the two proxies that Niroomand held that day from Weihua Shi (visiting assistant professor of economics) and Farooq Malik (assistant professor of economics). As USMPRIDE.COM readers are aware, the Chair-only governance option (III) won by an 11 to 8 decision, with Niroomand casting three votes himself. USMPRIDE.COM readers will also recall that Carter’s announcement of the meeting, via e-mail and memo, failed to mention anything about a vote being taken at that (then upcoming) meeting. Yet, Niroomand sought the two proxies from the USMGC campus.

(November 2, 2006) Who Else did the Balancing? An Investigation into Course Scheduling in the CoB "This Special Report examines the 2006-07 teaching schedules in the EFIB. Investigators at usmpride.com thought it would be interesting and instructive to follow the lead set by economics professor Franklin Mixon’s Grievance Appeal (see usmpride.com) by analyzing the variation in the so-called 6 “onerous teaching factors” spelled out in Mixon’s Appeal and original Grievance. The analysis found in Table 1 below follows that in Mixon’s Appeal Exhibit 5...".
(November 2, 2006) The Trellis Green Lawsuit: A Decade Later It has been about 12 years since then-assistant professor of economics Trellis G. Green filed suit against the University of Southern Mississippi and the Mississippi IHL, and a decade since that suit was settled. Given the current state of affairs in USM’s College of Business, it seems fitting that USMPRIDE.COM presents a series on the Green lawsuit. This is part 1 in that series.
(November 1, 2006) The Only Solution to CoB’s Corruption: Committee of the Whole "The CoB’s evaluation and raise systems are broken. This fact cannot be denied by any reasonable person. Currently, the CoB lists 70 full-time faculty members on its website. After recent administrative deceit, only 6 of those 70 should participate in the CoB’s 2006 annual evaluation and/or raise process (although an additional 5 or 6 (or more) may be “invited” by Harold Doty). Just who are the faculty slated to be participants in the meeting? Let’s play Meet the Participants. ..".

(October 31, 2006)  31st & Pearl, part 36, Carter’s Misguided Views "Recent reports at usmpride.com have completely razed EFIB Chair George Carter’s explanation of how the spring 2007 teaching schedules in the EFIB were constructed. In one way or another, person after person in the EFIB was given preferential scheduling treatment so that Carter could wage war on various other EFIB faculty members.  It’s instructive that BA 301-level analysis buried Carter’s “balancing” explanation.  Again, what does Carter teach? ..."

(November 2, 2006) The Curious Case of the Missing Economics Line Or, Anatomy of An Administrative Deal It starts, of all places, at USMGC. In May 2006, newly promoted Associate Professor of Economics David Sharpe resigns from USM to take an industry job. This is a crippling blow to the economics fiefdom carefully constructed over fifty years by the likes of Joseph Greene, Ty Black, George Carter, Charles Sawyer, and Farhang Niroomand. Having just lost Assistant Professors Sunny Wong and Melody Lo from the Hattiesburg faculty, Sharpe’s departure leaves economics short 3 members overall. Lo and Wong’s departures were expected, however, and Sawyer and Carter were able to make two hires – Akbar Marvasti and Sami Dakhlia – but were denied the opportunity to hire a replacement for Sharpe, even on a Visiting basis.
(November 8, 2006) Carter’s Thoughts Enlightening "More people than you probably realize find the Carter thoughts invaluable. They give us a window into the mind of CoB administrators like we’ve never had before. I keep thinking about the stories going around about how Doty and Niroomand talk about faculty and staff in the Dean’s suite. They supposedly shout from office to office instead of retreating behind closed doors. Also, the vulgarities that get spewed in that suite are enough to turn the stomachs of the staff that work there everyday and have to put up with it...".

He was later promoted to full professor and tenured, in 1996 (see below). In between these two dates was a short stint at the Mississippi IHL, leaving a 12-year tenure clock for Carter. ...”
