(April 28, 2010) Help a Dean Out USMNEWS.net Readers Respond with List of Names to Teach Economics in CoAL
Since running Saved by Departures, a number of USMNEWS.net readers have responded with names of USM faculty,
inside the CoB and out, who are qualified to teach economics courses for CoAL dean Denise von Herrmann. Readers
will recall that von Herrmann told The Hattiesburg American’s higher education reporter Ed Kemp that she did not
think there were any faculty around who could cover the courses being vacated by former USM economists Deniz
Gevrek and Sami Dakhlia
(April 28, 2010) The von Herrmann Solution The recent USMNEWS.net report Saved by Departures includes some
quotes from soon-to-be-former CoB economist Sami Dakhlia. These quotes, concerning the future prospects of USM’s
economics program in the College of Arts & Letters, come originally from Dakhlia’s interview with Ed Kemp, higher
education reporter for The Hattiesburg American. One of these is – “Asking three faculty to do the work of 12 is to
program a degree for failure.”
(May 4, 2010) GH Chatter If the whispers around the Southern Miss campus are correct, the new version of an
economics area in Arts and Letters is going to last a very short period of time. Half of those intended to move across the
street this summer have departed. Positions offered to some of the “retirees” (read: malcontents forced out) have been
refused. While some of the “retiree” group surely can retire, others cannot, so it is not far-fetched to assume they know
or are strongly suspicious of the future here for economists.
(May 7, 2010) Dear usmnews: The elimination of economics is a despicable event that has destroyed the best
department at the University of Southern Mississippi.

(May 24, 2010) MISSISSIPPI JUNIOR COLLEGES SHOW THE WAY An Approach to Budget Cutting that Senior
Institutions can Use Higher education reporter Ed Kemp indirectly provided USM’s faculty senate with the kinds of
information it needs to combat “draconian” approaches to budget cutting chosen by the USM central administration.
