(March 29, 2010) CoB to Get New Building The Mississippi legislature recently approved a $13 million construction plan for a new College of Business facility at USM. This gives Lance Nail a major accomplishment, although sources say the push for a new building began during the William Gunther administration (1998-2003) of the CBA. Gunther worked to secure millions from Gene Carlisle and other private sector CoB supporters, and Gunther’s plan called for a $25 million facility (almost 10 years ago). Recent news reports about the $13 million construction plan did not disclose details of any private support.
(April 14, 2010) Here, There, & Everywhere Examining the USM Departure of William Gunther As the CoB’s economists depart the Joseph Greene Hall stage at the end of the 2009-10 academic year, USMNEWS.net will be examining the research credentials that will be leaving the CoB, if not the institution as a whole. This installment focuses on professor William Gunther, who is one of the five mostly senior economists who retired so that the four mostly junior CoB economists could maintain their USM careers in the USM College of Arts & Letters.
(April 21, 2010) Retirees What will the economist retirees do once they depart in June? Here are some thoughts: Bill Gunther – he may be ready for the rocker, but West Florida may call. He may also try Spring Hill College; if they will hire Stephen Bushardt, they will probably hire him. Bill may be like Obama is right now: he may go somewhere he is not wanted, try to do something no one needs, and be paid an embarrassing amount to do it.

(April 27, 2010) CoB News 27 April 2010 Ranking the B-School Deans by Duane Cobb - Ranking the permanent USM business school deans is something I have been contemplating for some time. My ranking is in the table below.
(May 19, 2010) GH Chatter Some interesting recent chatter about outgoing CoB economist William Gunther. It seems he completely vacated his office during the last official week of class meetings. There is even some talk that he turned in his office keys. Does this mean he blew off finals, or gave them early? Interesting stuff. In other ECO news, outgoing professor Edward Nissan will be moving over to the CoAL this fall 2010 in a volunteer-type capacity. The word is that he will have an office and some support, in return for volunteering in the international development and political science area.
(June 30, 2010) 31st & Pearl Standing Alone The new fiscal year is here, meaning that we have turned the calendar to 1-July-2010. This date also marks another turning point for USM’s CoB – the economists have departed. Associate professor Daniel Monchuk and professor Akbar Marvasti are now part of USM’s College of Arts & Letters. Joining them, at least for a while, is former CoB associate professor of economics Trellis Green. The other senior economics professors, George Carter, William Gunther, Mark Klinedinst, and Edward Nissan, have moved into retirement. Whether this is what they wanted is another question.
