Examining the CoB Departure of Akbar Marvasti As the CoB’s economists depart the Joseph Greene Hall stage at the end of the 2009-10 academic year, USMNEWS.net will be examining the research credentials that will be leaving the CoB, if not the institution as a whole. This installment focuses on professor Akbar Marvasti, who is one of the four mostly “junior” economists who were saved by the forced retirements of five mostly senior CoB economists. What will the CoB (USM) lose with Marvasti’s departure? On the research front, the answer is in Table 1 below.

Marvasti Leaving USM HATTIESBURG – Numerous reports coming into USMNEWS.net indicate that Akbar Marvasti, one of the four former CoB economists forced to move to the CoAL in order to avoid termination at the hands of the Martha Saunders administration, is leaving USM before the 2010-11 academic year.

(June 30, 2010) 31st & Pearl Standing Alone The new fiscal year is here, meaning that we have turned the calendar to 1-July-2010. This date also marks another turning point for USM’s CoB – the economists have departed. Associate professor Daniel Monchuk and professor Akbar Marvasti are now part of USM’s College of Arts & Letters. Joining them, at least for a while, is former CoB associate professor of economics Trellis Green. The other senior economics professors, George Carter, William Gunther, Mark Klinedinst, and Edward Nissan, have moved into retirement. Whether this is what they wanted is another question.

(July 27, 2010) The Marvasti Hole Loss of CoAL-ECOer Leaves Uncovered Courses for Fall 2010 The recent news that former CoB economist Akbar Marvasti will be departing USM before the 2010-11 academic year led USMNEWS.net staff to examine the fall 2010 USM teaching schedule. In doing so on 23-July-2010, a large hole in CoAL-ECO was found regarding Marvasti’s fall 2010 teaching load. Relevant information from that search is presented below in Table 1.
