(November 4, 2009) CoB News, 4 November 2009 CoB Honors House Becomes Lecture Hall As explained in Van
Arnold's 3-Nov-09 presser entitled "Ford Executive Creel Addresses Business Honors House," Ford Motor Company
exec Randy Creel recently visited the CoB's Honors House in order to participate in the CoBHH's guest lecture series.
While there Creel was presented a "token of appreciation" by USM student Zach Mansell (see photo below).
(December 1, 2009) CoB News, 1 December 2009 "Faculty Members do more than Teach" Former USM provost Tim
Hudson, now president of the University of Houston at Victoria, recently wrote an op-ed for the Victoria Advocate
defending the work that university faculty do. As you will see from the link above, former CoB associate dean Farhang
Niroomand is prominently featured in the story. Hudson's UH-V views may come as a surprise to some USMers,
particularly considering the prominent role he played in what many consider the oppressive/anti-intellectual Shelby F.
Thames administration (2002-07) at USM.
(December 3, 2009) A Test for Faculty Words are insufficient to grasp what Mr. Nelson is trying to convey in his recent
CHE editorial “The AAUP: A View From the Top.” Don't simply think you understand our freedoms from an academic
or metaphysical perspective. Here's a practical, political test of your freedoms, and a real learning opportunity, to be
taken at the local level. Consider, for example, speaking out about thoroughly documented misrepresentations in your
university's/college's accreditation documents. You will clearly understand what your fellow faculty and
college/university administrators, and organizations like the AAUP or ACLU, mean by words stated in their
handbooks or other public pronouncements, like free exchange of ideas, shared governance, academic freedom,
integrity, etc.
(December 8, 2009) GH Chatter There has been chatter about George Carter, Mark Klinedinst, et al seeking emeritus
status and hoping to retain office spaces inside JGH. That sounds like a disaster for CoB dean Lance Nail, assuming it
comes about. Most other speculation has William Gunther heading back to Josephine, AL, and Edward Nissan
travelling the globe (on his own dime now). There has been some chatter about Carter hooking up with William Carey
University.
