(March 1, 2010) 31st & Pearl More than 3 Million Served The tally on the front page of USMNEWS.net says more than 3,003,000 hits. That's right, more than 3 million served. Recent months on this site have been mostly about the decision by USM to terminate the CoB's economics programs and its faculty.

(March 31, 2010) 31st & Pearl Happy Birthday USMNEWS.net This week – the week of 29-Mar-10 through 2-Apr-10 – USMNEWS.net celebrates its fourth birthday. That is, since this time back in 2006, USMNEWS.net began shining a light on administration bad behavior in USM’s b-school and other parts of the overall institution. The effort led by USMNEWS.net has helped faculty and staff in other institutions recognize administrative malfeasance when they witness it. For that we should all be grateful.
(April 8, 2010) GTL Baby! A Guest Editorial by Victoria Tyler Some people are famous for famously doing nothing. Such is the case with the cast of one of America’s hottest reality television shows, Jersey Shore (see insert below). Their rise to famously doing nothing has even added to the American urban lexicon, via the initials “GTL,” which stand for “Gym, Tan & Laundry.” To hear these Jersey “Guidos” and “Guidettes” explain it, their day typically consists of waking up and going to the gym to work out (G=Gym), then heading to the tanning bed (T=Tan), and finishing up by doing laundry (L=Laundry). Of course, the nights are reserved for partying.
(April 14, 2010) Gone and now remembered "USM News Item: On April 23, 2010 the Advanced Education Center at the Gulf Park Campus will be dedicated and re-named the Horace Weldon Fleming, Jr. Education Center." All too many people like to revise history to suit their own personal desires. When Horace Fleming was President of USM he was a man ahead of his time. Coming out of a non-state university environment, he started looking for ways to raise private money for USM. That is now expected. He was mostly disliked because he was not Aubrey Lucas. He thought wearing a suit just to be seen wearing a suit – especially in many months of summer – was silly and added nothing to productivity. It seems his stock value has now risen after the Shelby Thames administration, and perhaps, even during the Martha Saunders administration. Once again, as has so often happened at Southern Miss, people in the past start looking better as their successors administrate.
(April 26, 2010) Saved by Departures Two Retiring ECO Faculty may Remain at USM After 2009-10 It seems now that the surprise resignations of CoB economists Deniz Gevrek and Sami Dakhlia have worked to save two of the five mostly senior CoB economists who were set to retire after 2009-10 so that Gevrek, Dakhlia, Daniel Monchuk and Akbar Marvasti can continue their USM careers. This information comes to the USM family via Ed Kemp’s 26-April-2010 article in The Hattiesburg American entitled “USM must add 2 economics professors.”
