(May 11, 2010) More, more, more The following is from USM Faculty Senate minutes at
http://www.usm.edu/fsenate/minutes/2009-2010/2010-04-9.html: "Approximately $13M of bond money has been
allocated to start the business building. Another $13M or more will be needed from the state with an additional $5M
from private donors. There is planning money for the new nursing building." Given the economy, the budget cuts,
the campus turmoil, and dome animosity, where will Lance Nail get $5 million more?
ARTICLES CONCERNING
LANCE NAIL, DEAN
(May 4, 2010) GH Chatter At the end of year two of the Lance Nail administration, there is some talk that little
beyond the typical reorganization has been done in the CoB. Of course, there is the Honors House, but that is easily
offset by the loss of economics. Surely the AACSB will have some pointed questions in 2012, the next time the CoB is
up for reaccreditation.
(May 14, 2010) When is the School of Accountancy’s G5 Coming? A Guest Editorial by Victoria Tyler CoB dean
Lance Nail is throwing around so much money these days, particularly to the benefit of the School of Accountancy,
one can’t help but wonder when the SoA’s Gulfstream V is going to be delivered. After all, if USM president Martha
Saunders gets to have an airplane, why can’t the big dogs over in USM’s b-school have one?
(May 19, 2010) Accounting Up Two Another Pillar in the USM Faculty Senate’s Case Against the CoB Various news
reports and editorials here at USMNEWS.net have pointed out that various corners of the USM campus are
becoming more and more concerned about what they view as CoB largesse, particulary in the School of
Accountancy. Reading in the news that new directors and professors are being hired in the SoA – at well over
$100,000 per year and at a time when the institution is looking to trim $15 million, if not $20 million, from its budget
– provides justification for the growing sentiment around campus. Case in point – the distaste for the b-school was
almost palpable at the May-2010 faculty senate meeting, where USM provost Robert Lyman was grilled about the
CoB’s high profile hiring.
(June 10, 2010) Faculty Senate Watch CoB Dean wants New Business Building Relocated REPORT TO USM
FACULTY SENATE GENERATES CONCERNS A recent USMNEWS.net report discussed how the CoB’s new
business building has been designed and planned for a location across the street from the Liberal Arts Building, as
shown within the gold highlighted area in the insert below. This location is part of what the master campus facility
planning committee refers to as the academic core of the USM-H campus, given the physical locations of the CoB, the
CoAL, and the other USM colleges. This core is (roughly) outlined below in black (though there are some
un-captured portions to the right of the outlined area).
(June 28, 2010) lastweek w/ usmnews.net 28-June-2010 – Transcript In light of this and other CoB-related scandals,
how do you two feel about USM’s b-school at this point in its history? Duane Cobb: Former [b-school] dean Tyrone
Black looks almost mythical at this point. Given the state of the CoB today, and its recent record with deans, most
would find it difficult to believe Black is even real after hearing about how good the USM business college was
during his tenure as dean. Dean [Lance] Nail doesn’t yet have a real accomplishment to point to at present, and if
he’s planning on resting his case on a new building, he’s going to have to raise loads of money. I just don’t see it
happening.
