(September 28, 2009) CoB News, 28 September 2009 Is USM a Cesspool? The Hattiesburg American has published another story involving a lawsuit against USM. This time the story was written by THA's managing editor Dan Davis (entitled Eagle Walk incident prompts suit against USM), and this time the plaintiff is former USM assistant athletics director Greg Herring, who claims that he was faced with the choice of resigning or being fired by USM president Martha Saunders back in the fall of 2008. According to Herring, the choice resulted from his decision to commence USM's "Eagle Walk" against East Carolina despite the fact that Saunders had not arrived at the proper location at M.M. Roberts Stadium at the time.
(October 13, 2009) Longing AN EDITORIAL ON THE WAY THINGS ARE AT SOUTHERN MISS Today's (12-Oct-09) blog from USM president Martha Saunders, which invites USM faculty and staff to come and enjoy the festivities at the 13-Oct-09 "open house" for the new University Club, highlights the way things often work at USM. In doing so it hints at three types of "longing" that characterize the way USM administrators operate. The first type of longing centers around things that the institution can easily (readily) turn into a reality. Examples of these include establishing a University Club, or at the more local level, setting up a new CoB Honors House for well-connected students. Often times these forms of longing center around reconstructing the way things once were at USM, as emphasized by Saunders' latest post about missing the Charcoal Room and the original University Club.
(November 2, 2009) GH Chatter USM's big national tv loss to Houston on Saturday dropped the Golden Eagles to 5-4 on the year. Now even getting to a bowl is at issue. Should the Eagles fail to get to New Orleans or somewhere comparable, chatter has it that the Academic Planning Group may have to absorb an additional $100,000 or so in budget cuts to the institution in order to assist Richard Giannini's "situation." The Eagles have road games with Marshall and East Carolina and a home date with Tulsa remaining. Anything could happen.
(November 30, 2009) CoB News, 30 November 2009 Athletics to Add to Budget Woes Again? USM's dire budget situation has been the subject of numerous reports and editorials over the past several months here at USMNEWS.net. According to figures released by Mississippi IHL Commissioner Hank Bounds, the future looks much worse than the present for Mississippi's eight public institutions. As a result, a number of politicians, including MS Governor Haley Barbour, are proposing that some of MS' public universities be consolidated. Barbour's plan calls for Mississippi University for Women to be combined with Mississippi State University, and for the state's three historically black universities to be consolidated within (existing) Jackson State University.
