ALVIN WILLIAMS, FORMER PROFESSOR OF
MANAGEMENT AND INTERIM DEAN
(April 10, 2007) EDITORIAL Today The University of Southern Mississippi announced that Dean D. Harold Doty and
Associate Dean Farhang Niroomand had resigned from their administrative positions, effective immediately. During a
meeting with Provost Jay Grimes, the College of Business faculty was advised that Dean Doty would not be returning to
campus until the fall semester. Given the destruction wreaked on CoB by Dr. Doty and his administrative cohorts, this
editor, the reporters and contributors to usmnews.net consider this to be – at least in the short term – positive news. It will
truly be positive news if Interim Dean Alvin Williams works to eliminate the divisiveness and atmosphere of favoritism
created by Dr. Doty and his subordinates.
(April 14, 2007) EDITORIAL: “Dr. Alvin Williams, who chaired the search committee charged with selecting the CBED
[AKA, CBA, CoB] dean . . . said, ‘Harold Doty is a visionary . . . He is engaging, innovative and team-oriented.’”
http://www.usm.edu/pr/prnews/june03/cbadean03.htm Doty now shares the status of other failed administrators and
hangers-on being paid a fortune. Lucas, Ginn, Thames, Henderson, Gunther, Doty, and the list goes on. As a long-time
participant in CoB administration, Dr. Williams observed and participated in the “leadership” of CoB. Even Donna
Davis, several years ago, stopped by my office and observed that the evaluation process was not done properly. If she
noticed, I bet Dr. Williams did, too. So, is it going to be more of the same.
(April 19, 2007) Interim CoB Dean Alvin Williams’ Inaugural Speech April 10, 2007 Thanks for the opportunity, and I
look forward to working with everybody in this capacity. It’s a difficult time for our college, but it’s also an interesting
time. And I think it’s a time for us to work in a spirit of trust, in a spirit of teamwork, and in a spirit of civility. And I say
that from the standpoint of Joe Greene. Some of you are old enough to remember Joe. Joe was Dean for 35 years, and he
was a man of civility, and a man of integrity, and I would like to restore just a little bit of Joe Greene in Joe Greene Hall.
(May 1, 2007) Special Report Now Holding the Reigns An Investigative Series on CoB Faculty Research Credentials One
item that a number of usmnews.net readers have asked for of late is a report on the research backgrounds of the CoB’s
new Interim Dean Alvin Williams (professor of marketing) and his Interim Associate Dean Joseph Peyrefitte (associate
professor of management). Our investigators have put together that report (4/2007), and are making it available to you
here. Table 1 summarizes the journal article publications of the two, using Business Source Complete and SEDONA
records.
(May 5, 2007) CoB Civility 101 by Duane Cobb Now, about 25 days into the Alvin Williams regime in the CoB, we learn
just what Williams' plan for "getting civility back into Joe Greene Hall" was all about. It's too bad the plan was such an
utter failure, and that May 4, 2007, was about as sorry a day as the CoB has seen in quite some time.
