USMNEWS.NET reporters have learned that Interim CoB Dean Alvin Williams will retire at the end of this
academic year (2007-08). Williams announced his plans to retire to CoB faculty via e-mail on 12-Nov-2007, stating
that after "almost 30 years of service to Southern Miss, I have made the very, very difficult decision to retire on June
30, 2008." Sources tell USMNEWS.NET reporters that Williams' decision to retire in June of 2008 explains his
willingness, after turning down so many other invitations to serve as CoB Dean, to accept the Interim CoB Dean
position on 10-April-07. In doing so, Williams was able to parley one year of Interim service into a final year salary
of $175,000, boosting his PERS base by at least $12,500.

(November 12, 2007) ". . . Very, Very Difficult Decision" A Look at the Departure of Interim CoB Dean Alvin
Williams As previously report by USMNEWS.NET, the CoB's Interim Dean, Alvin Williams, is set to retire from
USM on 30-June-08. Williams' announcement on 12-Nov-07 came as a surprise to many CoB faculty, particularly
because the CoB is currently in the midst of a so-called "6th Year Review" with the AACSB, and the visit from the
CoB's Peer Review Team is still at least three months away.
(November 13, 2007) All Bets are Off Now by Duane Cobb Just six hours after a 31st & Pearl columnist at

plans to retire from USM in June of 2008.
(November 15, 2007) Dear usmnews.net, I have seen that Jon Carr's recent publication in The Academy of
Management Journal is prominently displayed now in the Greene Hall publication case. That is an outstanding
accomplishment for Jon and for the College. What I would like know, and I am sure something other business
faculty want to know, is why such a distinction earned Jon only the sixth biggest merit raise (2007) in the whole
College. Not one of the people in front of Jon (Mike Wittmann, Sami Dakhlia, Akbar Marvasti, Alvin Williams and
John Clark) deserve anything close to the raise that Jon should have gotten this year. The fact that they all got more
than he did is terrible.
