D. HAROLD DOTY, FORMER DEAN, COLLEGE OF BUSINESS,
CURRENT DEAN, UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT TYLER
(April 2, 2009) Dr. Doty & Mr. Fundraiser The Story of Harold Doty -- the Real Jekyll-and-Hyde Former CoB Dean
Former CoB dean Duane Harold Doty recently jaunted off to Tyler, TX, to tell the good folks of the UT-T business
school that he makes an excellent candidate to lead them (as their new b-school dean) into the future. To do that Doty
likely chose to tell some tales about his days as dean of USM's CoB from 2003-07. He probably told stories about how
a few malcontents made life in the CoB hard for many CoBers, including himself. He also likely wove tales about
"mental health concerns" and other difficulties in dealing with the people over in Hattiesburg.
(April 6, 2009) Breaking News Doty Pulling All Stops for Job at UT-Tyler HATTIESBURG – Former CoB dean (and
current CoB management professor) Harold Doty appears to be pulling all stops in his pursuit of the opening at the
top of the University of Texas – Tyler’s College of Business and Technology. An earlier editorial from Duane Cobb
indicated that Doty is likely benefitting from the presence of former USM VP of Finance Gregg Lassen, who is now
the VP for Business Affairs at UT-T. Though the presence of Lassen will no doubt help Doty secure employment in
Tyler, the presence of former USM College of Health Dean Peter Fos, who is now UT-Tyler’s Provost and VP for
Academic Affairs, will likely do even more for Doty given his close relationship with Fos while the two served in the
Shelby F. Thames administration at USM.
(April 6, 2009) Cheaper by This Dozen Twelve Current CoB Faculty USM Dean Lance Nail Could Stand to Lose by
Duane Cobb Picking up where my recent ranking of CoB faculty that CoB dean Lance Nail can’t afford to lose (Behind
the 8) left off, this report ranks the top 12 current CoB faculty that dean Lance Nail can’t afford to have hang on for an
extended period. That is, without these 12 CoB faculty, the CoB’s ranking amongst Gulf South business schools would
certainly rise higher. Since this list is 50% longer than the last, let’s get right to it:
(April 7, 2009) 31st & Pearl The Doty We Know The news that former CoB dean Duane Harold Doty went off to
interview for the top b-school position at the University of Texas at Tyler was of interest to current and former CoBers
alike.
(April 14, 2009) Our Most Talented Colleagues A Look at the Numbers This series has presented what sources refer to
as Dakhlia's ruse in a new light by showing that the talent lies with those faculty who had been targeted by CoB
administrators and their supporters, such as Dakhlia -- i.e., the ones Topping spoke for. It is in the number of unique
A-level journal publications that the real abilities of "our most talented colleagues" shines through. This final
installment (part 10) in the series summarizes previous results, using Table 1 below. It indicates that for two-thirds of
the CoB, the reign of D. Harold Doty meant little short of destruction, with some units experiencing losses in unique
A-level journal publications per person in the 2.7 to 3.1 range. Of the one-third of the CoB still holding its own, ACC
and FIN are being held togother almost solely by Marc DePree and James Lindley, respectively. These are CoB faculty
held in disdain by Doty (et al.). The other unit, DS, has maintained itself despite past attempts by Doty to eliminate it
altogether.
