(April 8, 2010) CoB News 8 April 2010 “Licensed to Ill” – An Editorial from the Desk of Susan Greene-Lewis -The recent report Already One of Them, about new ACC director Skip Hughes’ co-authored paper on the student evaluations of teaching, reminded me of the title of the Beastie Boys’ debut album. That title is Licensed to Ill. This is the type of license that Hughes now holds when it comes to evaluating the teaching effectiveness of the accounting faculty in his charge. If he doesn’t like a faculty member (sinner), then he can hate his or her inadequate teaching (sin), as indicated by his or her student evaluations of teaching. However, if he likes him or her, then he can provide CoB dean Lance Nail with a written rationale, citing his own paper below, as to why the particular faculty member received a chair’s teaching rating that is so good.
(April 9, 2010) GH Chatter Word around JGH and other parts of campus is that there is growing hostility concerning the hiring of new, expensive faculty in ACC. This hostility has, of course, made its way to the new APG, the group of faculty, staff and administrators that is working closely with USM officials to cut $15-$20 million out of the budget. New ACC director Skip Hughes is closely linked to these hiring decisions, meaning that his name is not well-received in many quarters these days.
(April 8, 2010) GTL Baby! A Guest Editorial by Victoria Tyler Some people are famous for famously doing nothing. Such is the case with the cast of one of America’s hottest reality television shows, Jersey Shore (see insert below). Their rise to famously doing nothing has even added to the American urban lexicon, via the initials “GTL,” which stand for “Gym, Tan & Laundry.” To hear these Jersey “Guidos” and “Guidettes” explain it, their day typically consists of waking up and going to the gym to work out (G=Gym), then heading to the tanning bed (T=Tan), and finishing up by doing laundry (L=Laundry). Of course, the nights are reserved for partying.
(April 12, 2010) GH Chatter Stories are spreading that the Lance Nail administration threw Skip Hughes and the accountants a bone when Charles Jordan was presented with the 2010 AT&T Outstanding Faculty Award at the recent CoB awards banquet. Jordan won the award back in 2007 as well. Chatter is that Hughes et al. were smarting a bit after ACC was basically passed over in the BAC chairs process, despite the fact that ACC owns both the Morgan Professorship and the Horne LLP Professorship. With recent reports indicating that ACC has no shot at the 2011 Louis K. Brandt Research Award, this process of entitlement for the accountants may continue into 2011. Look for Stanley Clark or another accountant to pick up the 2011 AT&T Award.
(May 5, 2010) Skip Exposed by Duane Cobb The one-time LSU accountant, Kirby “Skip” Hughes, came to USM’s b-school (in 2009) with a decent record. He had some good journal pubs, and he held a chaired position. However, as the old saying goes – that was then, this is now. Hughes is now the new director of the CoB’s accounting school. In that capacity, he reports to CoB dean Lance Nail, who assumed the top position in the CoB just one year prior to bringing Skip on board.
