(December 1, 2009) Top Stories of 2009 by Duane Cobb Long-time readers of USMNEWS.net are probably aware that I like to provide “Top __” type lists from time to time. The end of the year is a popular occasion for such a thing. In this three-part series, of which this is Part 2, I am providing my Top 10 news stories of 2009. Let’s get to the list.
5. LSU’s Kirby “Skip” Hughes Hired to Lead ACC
(December 15, 2009) CoBers' 2009 Christmas Lists . . . Just for Fun, part 1 Skip Hughes (ACC Chair) new admin assistant

(December 14, 2009) GH Chatter There has been some recent chatter about Melissa McIntyre leaving the accounting department. Word is that new ACC head Skip Hughes did not like McIntyre's choice of hairstyle. As one might expect, this type of buzz has prompted some CoBers to look into what LSUers might have to say about their old colleague Hughes.

(December 16, 2009) “Things are going to change around here.” Dear Accounting Colleagues, I met with Director Hughes a few days ago and that’s what he said: He “jumped on this train as the train is already moving down the track.” But, be clear, now that the economists are gone, “[t]hings are going to change around here.”

(December 17, 2009) “Things are going to change around here.” Dear Accounting Colleagues, You insisted on including The CPA Journal, Journal of Accountancy, Strategic Finance, and similar journals in the A section of CoB’s Journal Rankings, not to mention the vanity pubs you’ve elevated to B and C status like the Journal of Applied Business Research or Journal of Business and Economic Perspectives (Oops, no “accounting” in the titles—see previous edition of “Things are going to change…” They don’t count.).

(December 17, 2009) 31st & Pearl The Skip Hughes Train It doesn't take a genius to understand that when USM hires from a place like LSU it's not getting the cream of the crop. No, it's more likely getting someone that those on the bayou would rather see gone anyway. That's why the new USMNEWS.net series about Skip Hughes' views is such a hit with USMNEWS.net readers. Reading Hughes' statements about accounting research and the appropriate research outlets for CoB accountants would be amusing if they weren't so real. Now, CoBers are stuck with yet another administrator cut from the same ol' George Carter-type nonsense cloth.
(December 17, 2009) GH Chatter Not surprisingly, the new USMNEWS.net series on accounting chair Kirby "Skip" Hughes is generating lots of chatter. After what we've read so far, how could it not? It's difficult to imagine that his chairmanship will carry on for any real length of time, or that it won't end badly.
