(July 30, 2009) Carter Nailed It Former EFIB chair, and CoB economics professor, George Carter nailed it a while back when he said that the CoB's economists tended to be intemperate, or not collegial, and as a result they had become pariahs in Joseph A. Greene Hall. Fortunately for USMNEWS.net readers, Carter did not know his comments were being saved for posterity (they are now in the USMNEWS.net audio library), otherwise he would not likely have been so candid. He is, after all, as big a part of the ECO cabal as anyone else, so his condemnation applies to him just like it does to some of the other dismal scientists roaming the halls of USM's b-school.

(August 13, 2009) Enrollments & Economics A Special Report on One Stretch of ECO's Road to the Present The problem with student enrollments in the CoB's economics programs is a long-standing one that most faculty who have spent any time in USM's b-school know something about. Through recent news reports in The Hattiesburg American and elsewhere, we've learned that the three economics majors under the CoB umbrella can count only 21 majors at one time, and that they have graduated only 10 students (combined) over the past three years. Those figures come to 7 students per program, and 3 graduates per year combined. With 10-12 full-time faculty, several of which earn more than $90,000 per 9-month academic year, there is no escaping the conclusion that something has to change.
(August 14, 2009) breaking news . . . Carter, Klinedinst Blast Nail, USM Administration HATTIESBURG – CoB economics professors George Carter and Mark Klinedinst have thrown down the gauntlet, accusing Lance Nail of targeting the CoB's economists, not just the CoB's economics programs. In an interview with INSIDE HIGHER ED's Jack Stripling about the recent elimination of USM's economics programs, for Stripling's 14-August-09 article entitled "Cruel Irony," Carter stated that due process has been denied to economics professors who were unrepresented on the budget committee and kept in the dark about its deliberations throughout the process. Not only that, in a letter provided by Carter to Stripling, Carter accuses the USM administration, including CoB dean Lance Nail, of targeting the economics program as "simply a subterfuge to replace existing faculty."
(August 18, 2009) CoB Economists Boiling Over by Duane Cobb The level of anger coming from the CoB's economists is reaching new heights with every day passing day. Since being informed last week that their programs, and employment lines, are to be cut by USM, members of this group have been posting anonymously to various Internet message boards.
(August 20, 2009) Ironic Cruelty A Guest Editorial by Victoria Tyler If the harms of the past weren't so significant it would almost be humorous to read what the CoB's economists are now saying – that they are victims of cruelty – in response to the Southern Miss administration's decision to save $1 million in taxpayer funds by cutting economics at the institution.
