(October 29, 2009) GH Chatter There has been more chatter about Akbar Marvasti's unusual fall 2009 tenure decision by the IHL.
Expect more, as these discussions seem to pop up when someone in the CoB gets "special treatment" of some kind. Chatter has it
that in Marvasti's case the university needed the results of some sort of inquiry before it could proceed. According to other chatter,
some in the CoB were warned near the time he was hired that issues involving Marvasti might arise if he was brought on board.
DR. AKBAR MARVASTI,
FORMER ECONOMICS PROFESSOR
(December 1, 2009) Top Stories of 2009 by Duane Cobb Long-time readers of USMNEWS.net are probably aware that I like to
provide “Top __” type lists from time to time. The end of the year is a popular occasion for such a thing. In this three-part series, of
which this is Part 2, I am providing my Top 10 news stories of 2009. Let’s get to the list.
4. Akbar Marvasti’s “Special Tenure”
(March 24, 2010) Bachelor of Arts in Marvasti & Monchuk (M&M) The 2009-10 elimination of economics from USM’s CoB sent
only four of the unit’s 10 faculty to the College of Arts & Letters. Of the other six, five were forced into retirement and one was
fired. The four who survived (in the CoAL) were Sami Dakhlia, Deniz Gevrek, Akbar Marvasti and Daniel Monchuk. However,
before the move could be made (on 1-July-10), Gevrek surprised the CoB with a Christmas holidays 2009 departure for Texas
A&M University – Corpus Christi.
(April 6, 2010) 31st & Pearl CoB Stimulus Package Something CoB dean Lance Nail perhaps failed to properly account for when
ousting the CoB’s economics faculty is the combination of their low cost and wide applicability. Under previous b-school deans,
the economists were covering undergraduate and graduate economics courses, undergraduate and graduate statistics courses, and
undergraduate international business courses. In fact, this was also happening during the early (2008-10) portion of Nail’s current
reign. To top this all off, the CoB could, and still can, acquire economists for only 70-something thousand dollars apiece.
(April 7, 2010) GH Chatter There has been a little more chatter about Akbar Marvasti seeking to leave USM after this year. Time
will tell if it is to occur.
(April 8, 2010) GTL Baby! A Guest Editorial by Victoria Tyler Some people are famous for famously doing nothing. Such is the
case with the cast of one of America’s hottest reality television shows, Jersey Shore (see insert below). Their rise to famously
doing nothing has even added to the American urban lexicon, via the initials “GTL,” which stand for “Gym, Tan & Laundry.”
To hear these Jersey “Guidos” and “Guidettes” explain it, their day typically consists of waking up and going to the gym to
work out (G=Gym), then heading to the tanning bed (T=Tan), and finishing up by doing laundry (L=Laundry). Of course, the
nights are reserved for partying.
