(March 24, 2010) GH Chatter There is a bit of chatter these days about the latest issue of the CoB’s magazine, Venture. It seems the spring of 2010 issue is dominated by stories on the new CoB Honors House. The only other thing sprinkled amongst these reports is a puff piece on new accounting director Skip Hughes. How much does this mag cost?

(March 29, 2010) CoB to Get New Building The Mississippi legislature recently approved a $13 million construction plan for a new College of Business facility at USM. This gives Lance Nail a major accomplishment, although sources say the push for a new building began during the William Gunther administration (1998-2003) of the CBA. Gunther worked to secure millions from Gene Carlisle and other private sector CoB supporters, and Gunther’s plan called for a $25 million facility (almost 10 years ago). Recent news reports about the $13 million construction plan did not disclose details of any private support.
(April 6, 2010) 31st & Pearl CoB Stimulus Package Something CoB dean Lance Nail perhaps failed to properly account for when ousting the CoB’s economics faculty is the combination of their low cost and wide applicability. Under previous b-school deans, the economists were covering undergraduate and graduate economics courses, undergraduate and graduate statistics courses, and undergraduate international business courses. In fact, this was also happening during the early (2008-10) portion of Nail’s current reign. To top this all off, the CoB could, and still can, acquire economists for only 70-something thousand dollars apiece.
(April 14, 2010) 31st & Pearl Doty was Duped . . . What is Nail’s Excuse? Regular readers of USMNEWS.net should visit the site’s Archives from time to time. I was just there recently, looking back at The Past 30 Years, a report submitted by a USMNEWS.net reader about one of the ugliest episodes in recent CoB history.
(April 15, 2010) One Hundred Minus Ten by Duane Cobb Institutions that get to 100 years deserve to celebrate. This year, 2010, Southern Miss made it to that point. During the first few months of this year there were celebrations here and there. Then, on 30-March-10, there were numerous celebrations, including Founders’ Day 2010, the Centennial Convocation, dedication of the Centennial Gateway, and more.
(April 21, 2010) GH Chatter Could CoB dean Lance Nail be headed back to Birmingham? Some very juicy chatter from the past 48 hours says it’s possible. In what capacity? New dean of the b-school at Samford University. SU is a Tier 2 university – easily a major step up for Nail, given USM’s Tier 4 status at the moment. A recent net search suggests that this move would not happen until after the 2010-11 academic year, so don’t expect any major announcement just yet.
(April 27, 2010) CoB News 27 April 2010 Ranking the B-School Deans by Duane Cobb - Ranking the permanent USM business school deans is something I have been contemplating for some time. My ranking is in the table below.
