(April 3, 2008) Special Report Old Standbys An Investigative Report on Accounting’s AACSB Documents The recent
report, No Group Does It Like Accounting, highlights many of the accountants’ talent for what former EFIB economist
Charles Sawyer describes as “puffery.” In response to a criticism by the CoB’s AACSB Peer Review Team – that the
intellectual activity in the CoB’s accounting department seemed to have fallen off a cliff in the years leading up to 2007,
nine of the accountants put together a two-page table (which is also contained in the report linked above) containing
what they claimed was information about 32 future journal submissions from members of the group. The report linked
above, however, indicates that the two-page table provided by the accountants actually contained only 22 unique
planned journal article submissions, and that those 22 (future) articles entered the two-page AACSB table an average of
1.73 times each.

Williams’ 9-April-08 presser entitled “Master of Professional Accountancy to be Offered at Southern Miss Gulf Coast
in Fall” contains some quotes from Interim SAIS Director, Steven Jackson, that indicate just how stressed the CoB’s
accountants are becoming at news about the AACSB’s criticisms of the intellectual activity in the accounting division of
USM’s SAIS. According to Williams’ presser, Jackson told Williams that “he [Jackson] wants students to understand
that the [accounting] faculty members are knowledgeable and experienced.” Jackson then went on to tell Williams that
the CoB’s accountants have published in a “variety of journals,” listing the Journal of Applied Business Research,
Practical Tax Strategies, and The Journal of Accountancy, among others.

engine. No group is more excited about that than USMNEWS.NET’s reporters. While we await that, there are some
additional elements of research quality in the CoB to consider.
