(May 20, 2008) There's No Denying It, They Were All There by Duane Cobb The opinion that the 2002-07 USM Presidency of
Shelby F. Thames was an unmitigated disaster is one that is widely held. One gets glimpses of why this is so from (the pages of)
the various news media (e.g., The Hattiesburg American, The Clarion Ledger, The Student Printz, etc.) and web blogs (e.g., the
USM Forum -- to build trust, a team and a campus -- Message Board, Liberty & Power, USMNEWS.NET, etc.) that reported on the
USM issues of the day. One can also sense the devastation wrought on the institution (USM) by the Thames administration from
the oral histories passed on by those (faculty, staff, students, etc.) who were "there" during that awful time.
(May 27, 2008) 2007-2008 CoB Awards Another academic year draws to a close, it is time to look back and salute some of the CoB
faculty members would will not otherwise get their just rewards. The following is a list of the major awards:
(June 24, 2008) CoB News, 24 June 2008 Dakhlia Can Deliver, But He Needs Some Help From his perch atop the CoB's 2007-08
journal ranking committee, Sami Dakhlia brought home the goods for a number of EFIB faculty. Recent installments in
USMNEWS.NET's Special Report series showed that George Carter (EFIB Chairman), Akbar Marvasti, Edward Nissan, Farhang
Niroomand, John Clark, Matthew Hood, and Farooq Malik all had their research portfolios improved by upgrades that were
applied to various economics, finance and other journals by the journal ranking team. The number of A- and B-level publications
produced by this group, along with Dakhlia himself, rose dramatically from the work done by Dakhlia & Co.
(September 10, 2008) Economoney A Look at the 2008-09 Salaries in ECO Continuing recent reports examining some of the
financials in the CoB's economics unit, this report presents the 2008-09 salaries for all of the CoB-H's economics faculty. These
data, which come from the 2008-09 USM Budget Book, are shown below in Table 1.
(September 11, 2008) Help a Guy Out 10 Retirements that Would Make the CoB Better and Nail’s Job Easier by Duane Cobb To
hear some tell it, by accepting Martha Saunders’ invitation to govern the CoB, new dean Lance Nail has walked into a snake
pit-like situation. Though the problems in USM’s business school are both vast and deep, they are not insurmountable. However,
Nail’s job would be made a lot easier if a number of CoB faculty who are thought to be in the “retirement window” would sign the
necessary PERS acceptance papers and exit stage left. This essay lists the top 10 CoB faculty fitting this description. It provides
some narrative as to why these ten were both chosen and ordered as they are here.
(October 19, 2008) Special Report "Gappy" An Investigative Series on CoB Faculty Research Credentials This installment in the
Special Report series makes use of two of EFIB chairman George Carter's famous phrases. These are "gappy" and "in print." The
first is often used by Carter in describing holes in a particular faculty member's publication record. The second is increasingly used
by Carter to let young, untenured faculty understand that only journal articles that have actually been published by a journal, not
those that are "in press" or "forthcoming," count toward tenure and promotion.
