(May 11, 2010) The Morgan Dynasty – Just Another Piece of The Dirty Southern Miss? The recent news (see below) that USM provost Robert Lyman alluded to USM chief financial officer Joe Morgan being relieved of his CFO duties by USM president Martha Saunders, effective 30-Aug-2010, was sweeping across the Hattiesburg campus on 11-May-2010. USM faculty and staff are buzzing with questions about what Morgan did, what his new position and salary will be should he remain on campus in some capacity, and why he will not simply be cut by USM administrators in their effort to trim $15 million from the institution’s 2012 budget.

Provost Lyman Implies CFO Morgan was Relieved of Duty HATTIESBURG – USM provost Robert Lyman was questioned by the USM faculty senate on 7-May-2010 about the recent “resignation” of Joe Morgan from the position of USM chief financial officer. Lyman’s response implied that Morgan did not resign, but was instead relieved of CFO duties, though Lyman did state that he did not believe that Morgan was involved in the USM Research Foundation/Pinion Properties scandal. (May 26, 2010) GH Chatter What caused USM president Martha Saunders to ask for the resignation of USM chief financial officer Joe Morgan, as USM provost Robert Lyman intimated at a recent faculty senate meeting? Many in the USM faculty think there is a connection between Morgan and the recent USM Research Foundation scandal that has been covered by various news media. Still, some CoB chatter has it that Morgan may have run afoul of Saunders by providing some side door financial support for the CoB’s School of Accountancy, where Morgan’s sister, Mary Anderson, is employed. If accurate, not only would another scandal engulf the Saunders administration, there would also be another major reason for the USM faculty to be irate with accounting.
(June 2, 2010) GH Chatter The Joe Morgan resignation remains a popular concern among USM faculty. The investigation into improprieties involving the USM Research Foundation, and its Pinion Properties concern, is ongoing, as is talk that Morgan may have somehow been involved. At some point Morgan may find it beneficial to speak to the local media about these matters. As stated before, Morgan is the brother of CoB accountant Mary Anderson.

If he is not involved in the USM Research Foundation scandal regarding Pinion Properties, then his experience as CFO might allow for a transition to another institution.
