(August 26, 2008) Punitive Teaching Schedule = “Informal Discipline” Lessons from Roderick Posey’s Recent U.S.
District Court Testimony Former interim dean and former SAIS Director, Roderick Posey, recently provided sworn
testimony in a United States District Court proceeding that significantly diminished the reputations of both USM’s
business school and its former dean, Joseph A. Greene. During a discussion about “informal discipline” of faculty (by
administrators) in USM’s business school, the following exchange between Posey and legal counsel occurred,
wherein Q=legal counsel’s question/statement, and A=Posey’s response:

Duane Cobb To hear some tell it, by accepting Martha Saunders’ invitation to govern the CoB, new dean Lance Nail
has walked into a snake pit-like situation. Though the problems in USM’s business school are both vast and deep,
they are not insurmountable. However, Nail’s job would be made a lot easier if a number of CoB faculty who are
thought to be in the “retirement window” would sign the necessary PERS acceptance papers and exit stage left. This
essay lists the top 10 CoB faculty fitting this description. It provides some narrative as to why these ten were both
chosen and ordered as they are here.

established to provide additional financial rewards for accounting research. In reality, the Morgan Professorship has
been a rotational toy passed around – as one sage observer opined – like the town whore. There is no “earning” it.
There is no “competition” for it. It is a keep breathing in-and-out and wait your turn trophy. No more penetrating
proof is required than the current holder, Roderick Posey; he proclaims ‘over one hundred” publications, but no one
can seem to find more than a few. The apparent only factor in Posey’s possession of the Morgan Professorship is his
historic loyal behavior.
(October 19, 2008) Special Report "Gappy" An Investigative Series on CoB Faculty Research Credentials This
installment in the Special Report series makes use of two of EFIB chairman George Carter's famous phrases. These
are "gappy" and "in print." The first is often used by Carter in describing holes in a particular faculty member's
publication record. The second is increasingly used by Carter to let young, untenured faculty understand that only
journal articles that have actually been published by a journal, not those that are "in press" or "forthcoming," count
toward tenure and promotion.
